Book of Night by Holly Black | Review

I’ve had truly a hit or miss experience with Holly Black books. I read the Folk of the Air trilogy because everyoneeee was talking about it for a few years there in the YA community, and while there were some things about it I really enjoyed, I never really connected with the series and felt it to be a little underdeveloped. However, I was intrigued upon hearing that Holly was branching into the adult fiction sphere, especially with an urban fantasy novel (I feel like it’s honestly an underappreciated genre). When my library hold came in I hesitantly started it, […]

The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black | Review

I always start the books in this series with a sense of skepticism. Not because they have personally done anything wrong to me, but because I’m 1) Not always a fan of fae books and 2) Always skeptical of a fantasy book that’s under 400-500 pages. But Holly Black always pulls through and manages to write a tale of intrigue, action and simmering tension without all of the boring fantasy fluff, and The Queen of Nothing was no exception. It was a gripping conclusion to a trilogy that focuses on a purposely plotted narrative that gives readers the romance, magic […]

The Wicked King by Holly Black (Folk of the Air #2) | Review

*Warning: This review will contain spoilers for The Cruel Prince* While I enjoyed The Cruel Prince, I’ll be the first to admit that I didn’t really get the HYPE surrounding it- it was good but it was also full of excessively cruel bullying, confusing court politics (at least for me) and non-romances that didn’t do anything for me. But oh, how I stand corrected. Once I got into The Wicked King it was compulsively readable, and it finally CLICKED for me why this series is so successful. Also, infinite bonus points to Holly Black for managing to write a super […]

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black | Review

Despite the hype (and gorgeous cover), I went into The Cruel Prince with a TON of trepidation because I hadn’t had much luck with The Darkest Part of the Forest (my only other Holly Black read) and I NEVER have luck with audiobooks. Lo and behold, I actually really ended up liking The Cruel Prince and the dark, unapologetic spin it took on YA fantasy as it accompanied me on many a commute during peak season at work! I have to admit, I’m always somewhat biased when it comes to fae books because Sarah J Maas is really the only […]

The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black- Review

“We love until we do not. For us, love doesn’t fade gradually. It snaps like a branch bent too far.” I know what you’re thinking. You’re wondering how in the heck I only gave this book 2.5 stars. You’re probably wondering if I even read the same book as you did. Well, full disclosure: It breaks my heart to rate this book so low, but it just didn’t work for me. I was so so excited to read The Darkest Part of the Forest, as it was the first novel I picked up by Holly Black. I had read […]
