The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty |Review

“This Thursday night felt like adolescence: exquisitely painful and sharply beautiful.” -297 A few weeks ago I posted about craving some adult fiction to break up the mini-slump I felt I had fallen into with YA books, where many of them felt as if they were blending together, and the themes and characters were becoming monotonous to read. The Husband’s Secret was at the top of my adult fiction TBR list, and it’s the first book I chose to pick up in 2016 from my Christmas book haul. I read a majority of this book in a small handful of […]

Top Ten Books I’ve Recently Added To My TBR

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by the fantastic blog The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is “Top Ten Books I’ve Recently Added to My TBR.” My list this week is a mixture of backlist books, recent releases, and upcoming releases in 2016. These aren’t on my physical-I-already own-TBR, but rather they are new additions to my Goodreads TBR over the past month or so. In no particular order: Not Yet Released: The Loose Ends List by Carrie Firestone The Problem with Forever by Jennifer L. Armentrout The Girl Who Fell by Shannon M. Parker The […]

Pass the Truth, Please: That Incredible Time I Met Susan Dennard and Alex Bracken

Truthwitch and Passenger are books that are near-inescapable right now in the YA community. Some of the first big releases for 2016, they cultivated a buzz throughout the fall and winter that has definitely deemed them both worthy of purchase and pre-order. I was lucky enough to receive both from my boyfriend for my birthday this month, and in the perfect compliment to this gift was the realization that both Susan Dennard and Alex Bracken were going to be on tour in my state. So I planned out a 17 hour day to ensure that, come hell or high water […]

Considering My Culture When Reading

Considering My Culture When Reading

This past weekend I came across a School Library Journal article about the Pura Belpré award, which is given to outstanding literature for young people written by Latino authors living in the United States, which focuses on the Latino cultural experience. The award this year will be awarded at the ALA Annual conference over the summer. This article and award resonated with me, as I realized that since graduating from college I haven’t been exposed to as much culturally diverse literature, especially that of my own Latino heritage. While not something that’s always apparent upon my appearance, I am of […]

The Heir and the Spare by Emily Albright | Review

One of the most coveted items I received in my Christmas Haul, I was so incredibly excited to get my hands on The Heir and the Spare as I am a total sucker for anything featuring the modern-day-royalty story line. Two of my favorite reads from 2015 were The Royal We and Royal Wedding, so I was sure this was going to be another book that I could indulge in. In fact, it’s the first book from my Christmas Haul that I dove into. However, I wound up being extremely disappointed by the quality of the writing, predictable plot elements, […]

All About Those Challenges: 2016 Reading Ambitions

Another year, another set of challenges. This year I am aiming for low pressure challenges that will help me to focus on books that I already own and new releases I’ve been anticipating for a while. See below for my list of reading challenges I will be participating in (so far!) for 2016! Goodreads Challenge Goal: 50 Books I haven’t had a Goodreads challenge that decreased the number of books I aimed to read since I started the challenges back in 2011. Last year I finished at 74 books (my goal was 70). Ideally I would like to hit the […]

The Fill-In Boyfriend by Kasie West | Mini Review

I picked up my first Kasie West books in the hopes that it would add some levity to my reading schedule. I was in the middle of slogging through Illuminae (which is very good, but also very depressing) and needed something easy and fun to read- you know, something I could read in the bathtub or while waiting for an appointment. While The Fill-In Boyfriend definitely was fun, fluffy, and quick, I felt like I missed the rave-worthy aspects that I’ve heard so much about regarding West’s writing. The best and worst thing about this novel was the character development. […]
