Last January, I posted about how I was going to try out KU for the first time and check back in on how I was enjoying it/using it. Well, after 12 months of having KU, I’m happy to say that I am really enjoying it!
KU Stats
- This year I read 18 KU books with an average rating of 3.4 stars.
- 15 of the books were Romance while the other 3 were Romantasy (s0 basically romance, lol)
- 2 out of my top 5 books of 2023 are KU reads
- I didn’t pay full price (11.99) for most months; I joined during a promo ($4.99 for the first month) and unsubscribed a few months later when I needed a pause to focus on library books. When I signed up again there was a promo happening (I think 3 months for $.99 or something along those lines) and then I bought a new kindle which I believe came with 3 free months as well! I could see myself in the future taking breaks too if my TBR gets too large, and then resubscribing when there is some sort of deal or promo
Rating Breakdown
Of the KU books I read, the ratings broke down to:
- 2 Stars: 3
- 2.5 Stars: 1
- 3 Stars: 6
- 4 Stars: 4
- 4.5 Stars: 1
- 5 Stars: 3
KU Books Read
Do I Recommend KU?
Overall I’m pretty satisfied with KU! KU books made up exactly 1/3 of my books read in 2023, and it allowed me to really dive into the world of indie and self published romances, which for the most part have been really good! I will say, I’m sure there’s some not so great books out there on KU, but I do a lot of research (IG, Youtube, etc) before choosing my reads. I will say there seems to be a trend with KU books getting hyped on TikTok, so it’s interesting to see more authors finding success through self publishing; honestly most of the books I’m reading that are romance are not traditionally published these days.
If you want to dive into more romance, KU has a great selection, but I wouldn’t recommend it for folks who are looking for trad published books. There’s some, but access to self-pub titles is where the platform really shines!
