If you’ve been following my blog this past month you’ll know that I’m hosting the Wolves of Mercy Falls Read-A-Long over the next month and a half with She Reads She Blogs and CK’s Reading Corner! We’ll have discussion posts every Saturday (mine’s a tad late this week! Life got in the way…but onwards!) and hope you’ll join in, as well as we’ll have more chances to enter the giveaway for a signed copy of Sinner!

To see a list of discussion topics and sign up to participate, check out the announcement post here.

This Week’s Topic: Which Shiver character(s) warms your heart/inner fangirl.

Isabel Culpeper

After rereading Shiver and Linger, I’ve found that the secondary characters’ stories are almost more captivating in the series than the romance itself. Isabel is one of my favorites because she’s sort of an anti-hero. In the first book you think she’s going to be the stereotypical popular-mean-girl, but she’s actually smart and intuitive and doesn’t cry wolf (haha, see what I did there?) when she learns Sam’s secret. I admire Isabel’s tenacity, and her character draws me in a way that Grace’s doesn’t (which is interesting seeing that as a teen I identified with Grace more but now in my twenties I’m drawn more to Isabel). It’s refreshing reading about a strong female character because Stiefvater writes them well and The Raven Cycle in contrast has so many male characters (as does The Wolves of Mercy Falls, with a majority of the pack being male). I’m excited to see Isabel’s story progress in Sinner and she’s definitely on my list of top female characters!

Who’s your favorite Wolves of Mercy Falls character? Let me know in the comments and be sure to remember to join our Read-A-Long here and enter to win a signed copy of Sinner with a limited edition dust jacket here!

  1. I’m bummed that I missed this week’s discussion topic due to holiday travels and making up school work (finals are next week… almost done!). I may try to write my post and just publish it late, but I’m not 100% sure I’ll have time to get that done in a timely manner. Anyways, Isabel is a favorite of mine as well. I only just read this series for the first time earlier this year, but I think that I too would have connected more strongly with Grace had I read these books when I was younger. I like Grace, and Sam (especially Sam) but Isabel and Cole caught my attention from their first appearances and I was SOOO excited for Sinner (which I loved). I can’t wait to read your thoughts on Sinner when we get to that part of the readalong 🙂

    • No worries, this time of the year is SO busy! I think in some ways I “outgrew” Sam and Grace (which is funny since Cole and Isabel are more or less the same age as Sam and Grace) but it’s nice that there are a variety of characters to connect with in the novel, and that I can get something different out of it reading it at different ages. I’m curious as to whether or not Sinner will tie in any other Mercy Falls characters.
