I Will Go Down With My Ship: Third Edition

Started around Valentine’s Day 2015, I Will Go Down With My Ship is an original feature where I highlight my favorite (and sometimes *often* doomed YA couples). Since Valentine’s day is almost upon us again, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to continue to highlight my favorite fictional couples from books I’ve read in the past year. Feyre and Tamlin from A Court of Thorns and Roses There will quite possibly never be another couple that makes me swoon as much as Feyre and Tamlin. The Beauty and the Beast parallels, the gradual courtship, the raw physical chemistry between […]

Reel Talk in the Pages | The Hunger Games

Reel Talk in the Pages is a feature done by my Bookish Boyfriend Max, in which he critically compares a popular work of fiction to it’s film counterpart. Being rather new to the YA world, Max finally read The Hunger Games this past year, and now having seen all of the movies, has quite a lot to say. Well, here I am Mr. Johnny Come Lately. I know I know. The phenom has passed. All of the films of the Hunger Games series are finished and either on the big screen or on Blu Ray. And here I am […]

The Masked Truth by Kelley Armstrong | A Psychological Thriller Worth the Anxiety

In the YA genre, it’s rare that you get a thriller that’s grueling and graphic, one that makes you wince as you turn the page because you’re not quite sure what you’re going to encounter and how it’s going to affect you. Yet that’s exactly what The Masked Truth by Kelley Armstrong offers. It’s a story that isn’t bound by genre in it’s realistic portrayal of the realities of a hostage situation, and doesn’t sugar coat the fate of most of its characters. While I times it may be an intense read, I am always one to appreciate when a […]

Girl in the Pages Turns 2! | Anniversary Celebration & Giveaway!

I am so thrilled to be celebrating two years in the book blogging community today! My life has undergone so many changes over the past two years, but I was determined to keep blogging a part of it no matter what. With two years of blogging under my belt now, I can’t imagine my life WITHOUT this hobby, this community, and this incredible journey. My blog is one of the things in life I am most proud of, and the support I’ve received has truly been so meaningful and rewarding. While some may grow their followings tall, I’ve chosen to […]

Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater | Review

“You can be just friends with people, you know,” Orla said. “I think it’s crazy how you’re in love with all those raven boys.” I think I am about as short as Blue and this makes me identify with her on a spiritual level (no pun intended). That’s the beauty of this series: Maggie makes you feel so intricately connected to the characters in small, intimate ways, and sometimes silly ways, whether it’s through a Ronan’s cynicism and snarky remarks, Gansey’s obsessive behavior and paralyzing fear of bees, or Adam’s deep and dark desire to be better, stronger, to matter. While […]

The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty |Review

“This Thursday night felt like adolescence: exquisitely painful and sharply beautiful.” -297 A few weeks ago I posted about craving some adult fiction to break up the mini-slump I felt I had fallen into with YA books, where many of them felt as if they were blending together, and the themes and characters were becoming monotonous to read. The Husband’s Secret was at the top of my adult fiction TBR list, and it’s the first book I chose to pick up in 2016 from my Christmas book haul. I read a majority of this book in a small handful of […]

Top Ten Books I’ve Recently Added To My TBR

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by the fantastic blog The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is “Top Ten Books I’ve Recently Added to My TBR.” My list this week is a mixture of backlist books, recent releases, and upcoming releases in 2016. These aren’t on my physical-I-already own-TBR, but rather they are new additions to my Goodreads TBR over the past month or so. In no particular order: Not Yet Released: The Loose Ends List by Carrie Firestone The Problem with Forever by Jennifer L. Armentrout The Girl Who Fell by Shannon M. Parker The […]

Pass the Truth, Please: That Incredible Time I Met Susan Dennard and Alex Bracken

Truthwitch and Passenger are books that are near-inescapable right now in the YA community. Some of the first big releases for 2016, they cultivated a buzz throughout the fall and winter that has definitely deemed them both worthy of purchase and pre-order. I was lucky enough to receive both from my boyfriend for my birthday this month, and in the perfect compliment to this gift was the realization that both Susan Dennard and Alex Bracken were going to be on tour in my state. So I planned out a 17 hour day to ensure that, come hell or high water […]

Considering My Culture When Reading

This past weekend I came across a School Library Journal article about the Pura Belpré award, which is given to outstanding literature for young people written by Latino authors living in the United States, which focuses on the Latino cultural experience. The award this year will be awarded at the ALA Annual conference over the summer. This article and award resonated with me, as I realized that since graduating from college I haven’t been exposed to as much culturally diverse literature, especially that of my own Latino heritage. While not something that’s always apparent upon my appearance, I am of […]
