Feyre, Rhys, and their close-knit circle of friends are still busy rebuilding the Night Court and the vastly-changed world beyond. But Winter Solstice is finally near, and with it, a hard-earned reprieve. Yet even the festive atmosphere can't keep the shadows of the past from looming. As Feyre navigates her first Winter Solstice as High Lady, she finds that those dearest to her have more wounds than she anticipated--scars that will have far-reaching impact on the future of their Court.

Everyone who knows me knows I am complete and utter trash for this series, so I was beyond thrilled to receive my beautiful hardcover copy of this, dutifully waiting for me when I arrived home from YALLWEST this year. I devoured it in just a few hours (a luxury I often don’t have, to read a book in one sitting) and I was delighted and content to return to Velaris and read about domestic life with my all my fae baes. We had:

  • Lots of eating, shopping and celebrating which LORD KNOWS they all deserve after the war in ACOWAR.
  • Mor somehow being the most stylish and glamorous person, but being terrible at buying gifts.
  • #Nassian tension through the roof.
  • Angry snowball Amren.
  • Amren also making out like a bandit in presents.
  • Bryaxos running loose but no one seems really that concerned.
  • Tamlin reaping the non-rewards of all of his bad choices throughout the series.
  • More backstory for my precious Illyrian babies.
  • Centuries old snowball fight traditions.
  • Holiday decorating gone horribly wrong and Azriel having to salvage everything.
  • Feyre really beginning to connect with the people of Velaris and giving back to the community.
  • Realistic portrayal of the grief and trauma each character is experiencing and dealing with in their own way.
  • Incredibly sweet Feysand couple time (I know some people are bored with their relationship because the ~tension~ is gone, but it’s nice to read about people being in relationships and just living their lives without drama IMO).
  • No real plot but just 100% fluffy fun getting to spend time with my fave characters so why is anyone actually complaining about this?
  • View Spoiler »

Also I usually don’t read the “sampler” chapter teasers they include for the next book but of course I HAD TO FIND OUT who the new series was going to focus on and as most people guessed, it’s heavily going to focus on our precious Cassian and Nesta, and I ADORED it. I loved the river manor, loved the fresh take on the series but shifting the focus to other characters, and loved how my love and interest for Feyre and Rhysand is revived through reading them from another POV (seriously I feel like we all forgot how intimidating and powerful Rhys is because we always see him being a cinnamon roll through Feyre’s POV but damn I loved seeing him through Nesta’s eyes). Also can we please just agree that this series is now NA instead of YA?

Overall: I’ll just be over here somersaulting with anticipation until I can get my hands on the next book please & thank you. Hoping Ms. Maas writes a million more spinoff series in this universe because I will read them ALL.

  1. *shrieks* Just reading your list of things happening makes me want to reread it all over again! That snowball fight is absolutely amazing and hilarious and glorious, Mor’s unbelievably awful presents (and how no one has told her for like 500 years, what’s up with that??), and THAT SPOILER mehhhhh! Like you mentioned, I know a lot of people really didn’t like the lack of intense tension and plot but I completely agree with you: it was nice to see them all living together and dealing with the little problems that come up in hilarious ways and it also is such a great bridge into Nesta and Cassian’s section of the series. Also, I completely agree that all these POV’s are so, so great because we get to see different side’s of characters! I just can’t stop flailing about this, as you can tell. Lovely review, Cristina!

    • Right? I was wondering the same thing- how is she unaware her gifts suck after FIVE CENTURIES? lol. This was everything I needed/wanted in a wrap up/bridge novella and I am SO EXCITED about the next Cassian/Nesta series! I’m glad you feel the same way!

  2. A Court of Thorns and Roses series, is one of my all time favorites, especially book #2. I felt like Wings and Ruin let me down, and now this one too, and I feel horrible saying it D: I think I just expected more from this one, even though I knew it was a small bridging between the end of Feyre and Rhysand’s story, and the beginning of another. Shrug.. :/

    • Yes, ACOMAF is my favorite book of all time <3 I know ACOFAS didn't do it for a LOT of people, but I feel like my expectations were just to have some fluffy moments with the characters and I am STOKED for the new Nesta series!
