Earlier this year, Alexa of Alexa Loves Books, Cee of The Novel Hermit, Kristin of Super Space Chick, Sierra of SDavReads & I all discovered that we shared a mutual love and appreciation for Sailor Moon! After exchanging plenty of flailing tweets and constantly bringing up our love for this magical and empowering story, we felt it was only right to celebrate it – and that’s what happening this July. Every week will feature a brand new blog post per day from each of us, and we’re so excited to be sharing the Sailor Moon love with all our readers! For the schedule and giveaway, check out the announcement post!
Hello lovely readers! Today is Thursday which means it’s my day of the week to highlight my favorite childhood fandom, Sailor Moon, here on the blog! If you haven’t already, you should check out my intro post and book tag, my Sailor Saturn book recommendations, and my Sailor Moon favorites! This week it’s all about Sailor Moon swag.
My 90’s Collection
I grew up a huge, and I mean HUGE, Sailor Moon fan. My parents were actually really supportive of my Sailor Moon love, and I remember watching many episodes with my mom, aunt, and grandma with just as much frequency as I’d watch Disney movies with. My mom especially was awesome about helping me find Sailor Moon items to add to my collection, as even in the mid-late 90’s Sailor Scout items were becoming more rare and harder to find in the US. Writing this post is giving me so much nostalgia because I have so much Sailor Moon merchandise from the 90’s boxed away at my parent’s house, including all of the inner senshi Sailor Moon adventure dolls (Moon, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Tuxedo Mask, civilian Serena and Chibi-usa), Sailor Moon stationary, Sailor Moon playing cards, framed posters of Sailor Moon on the walls of my bedroom, and season one of the 90’s American dub on VHS (as well as the three Sailor Moon movies on VHS). The crown jewel to my collection is my Sailor Moon costume from my first grade Halloween (it’s still my favorite costume to date, and I still have most of it!) I remember my mom and I going to all of the local Toys ‘R Us stores in our area and hunting down Sailor Moon items like it was nobody’s business. I think I will have to make a post highlighting these items the next time I have an opportunity to unearth them from my parent’s house!
The Current Collection
When I was gathering all of the Sailor Moon items I have on hand in my current apartment, I realized my collection wasn’t too shabby considering up until the new, revamped manga were released a few years ago, it used to be really hard to find Sailor Moon merchandise in the states!
The oldest items in my current collection are the wall scroll (gifted to me when I was a small child by my mom on one of her obscure finds trips) and the shirt on the left (which was oversized and I used to use as a sleep shirt, but it’s now so worn from so many wears that I don’t use it very often for fear of it coming apart!) The books near the top of the picture were profile, “get to know” books for the scout featured on the cover. I was OBSESSED with them and they’re filled with full color pages of illustrations and fun facts (I used to buy them at Borders, haha!). I am forever kicking myself that I don’t have the Jupiter and Venus ones too! The Sailor Moon star pins were a gift from my boyfriend (one has Sailor Moon on it, and the other has Tuxedo Mask) as is the black shirt (from Hot Topic) and the Sailor Moon inspired bookmarks (he found them on Etsy a few years ago!). Finally, my more recent editions include the first half of Sailor Moon R on DVD (I was really excited when I found it, but then realized it was the VIZ dub that uses different voices and music than my beloved, original 90’s series) and the three Funko Pop figures: Tuxedo Mas, Sailor Moon and Luna, and Sailor Moon with Moon Stick and Luna (another Hot Topic find). I also have a good potion of the new manga that have been released over the past few years, though I need to finish my collection!
Do you have any Sailor Moon merchandise still? Have you recently collected any?
Be sure to enter the Summer of Sailor Scouts Giveaway (US only, for two Sailor Moon Funk Pops!) and check out the other swag posts this week!
