Favorite Book Read This Month: Just Listen by Sarah Dessen. It was a reread from years ago for me, but Dessen’s quiet contemporary writing still had an impact on me!
Least Favorite Book Read This Month: Even in Paradise by Chelsey Philpot. This Great Gatsby expectations missed the mark for me.
Book that Most Surprised Me This Month: The Winner’s Crime by Marie Rutkoski. It was so much slower than I thought it would be…

Updates About My Life This Month
I took a brief hiatus from the end of June through the first week of July (hence why this post is coming so late in the month) in order to go to ALA (best experience EVER) and Washington DC! (You can read more about where I went/why I took a hiatus here). I’m back now in full force though so expect recaps of my adventures on the blog next week!
I can’t wait to hear all about ALA. It looks like you got a lot of pretties!! 😀
I did get quite a few amazing titles! Thanks for all of your advice, Kay! 🙂
Glad you had a great time while you were away – Can’t wait to hear about ALA!
Thank you! Expect a post Monday or Tuesday about ALA!
I so so want to try a Sarah Dessen book. XD I see them pop up everywhere and ahhh I haven’t even read ONE yet. So this needs fixing, ASAP for sure. 😉 I really liked The Winner’s Crime, but I totally get that it was a bit slow. It didn’t have many expectations for it, actually, because I’m not the biggest fan of bk 1, BUT I KINDA FELL IN LOVE. Arin and Kestrel have such communication issues though. >_< Agh, the cliffhanger MURDERED MY SOUL.
SERIOUS communication issues. Like if any YA couple needed couple’s counseling they would need serious help working on that! Sarah Dessen has SUCH a wide variety of books to choose from, although there’s a range in how fluffy/deep they can be, so make sure you choose one you’re in the mood for when you DO try her out. I personally loved Dreamland and Just Listen.
I ssooooooo want that Jen E. Smith book! I can’t wait to read it because I LOVED all her other books! You have sooooo many of my anticipated reads I’m jelly! Hahaha 😀
I’ve read all of her books so far except the Geography of You and Me, and I love how the covers all coordinate even if they’re not technically in a “series.” I’m sure it will be great just like her others!
OMGGG look at all those books!! I so want to read I Crawl Through It and Dumplin’ and Six of Crows and…*breathe, Emily, breathe* So glad you liked Royal Wedding – loved that one 🙂
I’m SO excited for Dumplin’, I’m hoping to pick it up this week! Hooray for body positivity!
So many great ARCs! Wow! I really need to read the first two in the Winner’s Trilogy before the last comes out! How did you like it or is there a review coming up for the sequel?
-Monica @ Tomes Project
So I LOVED the first book in the winner’s trilogy but the second one….it was slow. It was very much a bridge book to lay the foundation for book 3. It took me a while to read it and it’s been hard for me to formulate my thoughts for a review (hence why it’s not up yet). I think the third one will be good, the second book in a series seems to always be the hardest to write!
The Winner’s Crime…oh no, slow in a good or bad way? I personally loved both books. I’ll be interested to read your thoughts. And I’m totally drooling at that stack of books from ALA!! 😀
I hate to say it, but in a bad way (for me at least). It felt like so much filler, and while the cliffhanger at the end makes it worth the read, I was bored a lot of the time reading it- it took me weeks to get through because I kept getting distracted by other, faster paced books.
I’m going to read The Winner’s Crime as soon as I finished ARCs, so let’s hope I could enjoy it
*I accidentally hit post comment before finishing it* since I hate slow books! Those stack looks awesome! Most of my tbr are in there, so hope you enjoy it 🙂
There’s a great cliffhanger at the end so hopefully it will be worth it for you to read!
I didn’t find “The Winner’s Curse” to be that slow. Of course it’s a middle book and we all want things to work out. So I guess the intrigue in the middle with Kestrel still trying to play both sides might be a little slower to build when we all want something good to happen.
Still one of my favorite series though! The third book of it and the third book of “The Remnant Chronicles” are the things I’m most looking forward to about 2016.
And I really need to read Josephine Angelini’s “Trail by Fire” series.
It is indeed still a phenomenal series! Rutkoski’s writing style is beautiful. Trial By Fire is amazing, and the second book is coming out September 1!
