Harry Potter MOTW [4]: If there was one thing about Harry Potter that you could change, what would it be?

HPMOTW (2)Harry Potter Moment of the Week is a weekly meme hosted by Uncorked Thoughts, and is a fantastic way to keep the Harry Potter magic alive year round, even when not reading the books!

The Theme This Week: If there was one thing about Harry Potter that you could change, what would it be?

I’m taking the question this week to mean Harry Potter as a series, rather than as a person. Personally, the thing that irked me the most throughout the series was the romance. It felt forced and unnecessary, and genuinely out of place. I’m not usually a hater of romance (in fact, I generally love it) but the pairings were all so predictable and way too convenient (Ron+Hermione and Harry+Ginny= everyone is now conveniently related…don’t even get me started on the epilogue). I understand romance and dating are a part of the age group but I just really couldn’t stand who got together, and I was so sick of Hermione and Ron’s bickering (and especially the fact that she still got together with him despite what a jerk he was abandoning them in the forest in the last book). I think this may be why Half Blood Prince is my least favorite installment in the series…all of the characters are so tied up in their dating drama and bickering with each other because of it!

  1. Yeah, I agree. It’s like she planned for them to get together so they did. I wish there had been no romance or something more surprising. haha yeah I think Hermione and Ron would’ve gotten divorced after a year.

My least favorite book was the last one, because it wasn’t the same without them being at Hogwarts and it felt like most of the plot was them camping out and hoping a horcrux would fall into their lap. (Which ironically enough is what happened.) I also didn’t like that two main-ish characters died ‘off page’ I wish we’d at least have been there or it would’ve been more dramatic or something.

    I liked this topic. 🙂

    • Right? Ron and Hermione literally had NOTHING redeeming about them, and I don’t even feel like their relationship was healthy with the amount of arguing they did. I agree with you about book seven- there was so much time spent wandering around the forest!

  2. Ah really? I loved the sixth one because we learnt all about voldemort. I really liked that the romances were awkward because at the end of the day they’re awkward teenagers, despite everything else. I understand what you mean about everyone conveniently ending up related though!

    • Voldemort’s backstory was a fascinating aspect about book six! I didn’t mind some of the pairing exhibiting how they navigated crushes and dating (like Ginny and Dean) it was just so much at once, and like I said, it’s just so odd how everyone’s related now!

  3. I feel along the same lines as sodiamondwords commented above ^^ I appreciated the awkwardness because it felt real. I DID have an issue with Ron/Lavender and Harry/Cho though. I still don’t think a boy like Harry would have EVER gone for someone like Cho…but anyways. I know what you mean about the epilogue though, it was ‘convenient’ but I was just happy Harry finally had the one thing he never had: a family.

  4. Oh man really? I can understand not getting Ginny and Harry, but I sometimes forget that Ginny is completely badass in the books. The movie versions of the characters don’t seem to mesh very well, but I always thought they would get together even from the very beginning. Who can resist a altogether embarrassing valentine gram?

    • You have a good point- whenever I re-read the books I always appreciate Ginny a LOT more than I do in the films, as the actors don’t seem to have any chemistry together. Very fair point! And yeah, it’s funny to look back at the hints dropped in earlier books. “His eyes are as green as a fresh pickled toad, his hair is as dark as a blackboard, he’s really divine, I wish he were mine, the hero who conquered the dark lord”…should I be concerned that I knew the exact quote from the valentine gram off of the top of my head? 😛

    • I didn’t even think about stopping certain character deaths as a way to approach this topic, but I would have saved Fred!! I held up pretty ok with the deaths (Sirius was the one that really got me and I figured after that I was sufficiently jaded) but when Fred died…ugh.

  5. I have to agree with you here. I didn’t feel like the romance was needed in the book. Crushes and adolescent partners yes but not the neat tie up at the end. I was never a huge shipper of any of the characters. The romance was just something that happened alongside the story :).
