Top Ten Books I Really Want to Read But Don’t Own Yet

Posted August 25, 2014 by Cristina (Girl in the Pages) in Top Ten Tuesday, Weekly Features/Memes / 35 Comments

toptendon'townTop Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by the fantastic blog The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic was “Top Ten Books I Really Want to Read but don’t Own Yet.” They’re in no particular order!

1) Dangerous Boys– Because Dangerous Girls played with my head and left me a mess and I’m so anxious to fall under Abigail Haas’ spell again!

2) The Winner’s Curse– A gorgeous cover plus good reviews around the blogging sphere have me really curious to check out this fantasy novel.

3) Landline– Rowell has charmed me with her other works so far and I’m interested to see how the “time travel” element plays out in her newest contemporary.

4) Paper Towns– Simply because I need something other than TFIOS to judge John Green by.

5) Eleanor and Park– I cannot believe I haven’t read this yet! Plus I hear it tackles heavier topics like stigmas surrounding interracial relationships and bullying and I’m curious to see how Rowell deals with these issues.

6) A Mad, Wicked Folly– I haven’t read a good historical fiction novel in quite a while and I’ve heard really good things about this one, plus the cover is gorgeous!

7) A Monster Calls– That cover! Plus great reviews all around from bloggers I know, and I’m really curious to see what it’s about!

8) The Retribution of Mara Dyer– I haven’t actually even read the secound book in this series yet (though I own it) but I’m so entranced by this series so far that I know this will be an auto-buy for me!

9) The Truth About Alice- This has been on my TBR list for a LONG time. I really think the topics in this book (harassment, bullying, slut-shaming) are really important and under-addressed in YA, and the shifting perspectives seem like it’s a unique take on the contemporary genre.

10) Dance of the Red Death– I loved the eerie, first novel in this steampunk meets victorian series and I want to find out what happens in this unsettling fantasy world.

  1. I absolutely loved Dangerous Girls, I’ve already have Dangerous Boys I’m just waiting for the right moment to read it. The Winner’s Curse was so surprisingly good, I didn’t thought that I would enjoy it as much as I did. I’ hesitant to pick up Eleanor and Park partly because I got spoiled on the end but partly because I didn’t enjoy Fangirl. One of my friends’ keep recommending A Monster Calls to me and I’m interested but the time was never right, yet. The Truth About Alice is on my list too, I can’t wait to read that book!
    Amazing list!
    Here’s mine: http://reading-is-dreaming-with-open-eyes.blogspot.hu/2014/08/top-ten-books-i-really-want-to-read-but.html

    • I’m waiting for the right moment to purchase Dangerous Boys as well, I feel like I need just like a day where I have no interruptions to read it because it’s sure to mess with my mind so much! I actually enjoyed Fangirl but it seems like Eleanor and Park deals with heavier issues (Fangirl was kind of just a coming of age story) so I’m interested in seeing how Rowell deals with those topics. Thanks for all of the recommendations and for stopping by!

  2. Same here for A Monster Calls! Next time my self control is weak at the bookstore I bet I’ll be buying it, although I actually want to try the audiobook because Jason Isaacs is the reader. Never heard of Dance of the Red Death before now; it sounds so good!

    • I bet the audiobook is FANTASTIC then! Although I am coveting the physical copy because the cover is so interesting! Dance of the Red Death is the sequeal to Masque of the Red Death, which I HIGHLY recommend and it’s based off of a Poe short story!

  3. Landline made it to my list too! I recently read Attachments and I think it may become my new “I just want to read a book that I know I will like” book. So, I’m interested in reading more of Rainbow’s writing 🙂

  4. A lot of great choices here that I’m sure will spark interest for you going forward for discussions (which has got me thinking that it might end up being a decent (S)he said discussion as well…maybe). If you enjoyed the cover for A Monster Calls–oh boy, the art will give you even more feels (do consider that version of the book and not the plain-text one!)

Cheers, joey via. thoughts and afterthoughts

  5. Eleanor & Park is a book blogger staple read. Haha! You need to get on it girly! 😛

It honestly wasn’t as great as everyone else said it was going to be, but there were things about it that I enjoyed. It’s the only Rainbow book I’ve read, so I really should try something else before I dismiss her completely.

    • I know! I just keep avoiding it at the library because I want to buy it, but it never seems to make it into my shopping cart! I realllllly liked Fangirl, so I’m hoping I’ll love it as well!

    • That’s funny, I’ve heard from others that his writing tends to all kind of run together. I wasn’t overly impressed by TFIOS, so I’m hoping that I’ll like Paper Towns better.

  6. So many of these I want to read, too. I’ve only read A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. It is one of my favorites if not my favorite book so obviously I think you should buy it. Every part about it is beautiful. The art, the writing, the storyline. It’s so perfect.
