Top Ten Tuesday is, as always, hosted by the fantastic blog the Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic is top ten cover trends you like or dislike!
Book Trends I Love
1) Black and White with one focus color
Jennifer E. Smith’s novels usually are like this!
2) Interesting Typography
I couldn’t stop looking at the cover of this book while I was reading it! I wish the symbols had been explained.
3) Covers featuring silhouettes
The UK always seems to get these pretty silhouette covers!
4) Covers Featuring the Dusk/ Night Sky
5) Fairytale Inspired Covers
6) Inverted Colors in Covers
Am I the only one who was super tempted to re-purchase all of my Twilight books to get the special edition white colors??
7) When each cover in a series has a specific color
It really makes my OCD with color coordination happy, as I can always associate a certain book with a certain color.
8) Beautiful yet eerie covers
I didn’t even like the Fallen series by Lauren Kate but I cannot deny how gorgeous the covers are. So eerie yet so so pretty without giving away exactly what the character is supposed to look like!
Book Trends I Can’t Stand
9) Covers that show faces!
I hate when my mental perception of what a character looks like is damaged by a model on the front cover! It stunts my imagination!
10) Covers dominated by text with little or no images.
Snoooooze.
Do you agree with any of my cover choices, or do my preferences drive you crazy?? Let me know in the comments and link back to your TTT post!
Totally agree, I hate covers with big text and faces! Here’s my TTT: http://deliabattie.wordpress.com/2014/06/24/top-ten-tuesday-cover-trends-i-likedislike/
I agree with all of your likes! My favourites are number one, b/w with a pop of colour, and number seven, different colours for each book.
I really like the Beautiful Creatures covers (the books were awful though) because they’re so minimalist.
But I gotta agree, faces on the cover is just a ‘no’ for me!
Great list Cristina! x
Thanks! I actually sort of enjoyed Beautiful Creatures (I loved the Southern setting) but the movie adaptation was TERRIBLE! What was it about the books you didn’t like?
I love it when covers only feature one or two colors with an accent cover that pops! I like the black and white covers with accents, but I also like covers with only a few other colors too like the Beginning of Everything by Robyn Schneider!
Here’s my TTT
I haven’t seen that cover but I’ll have to check it out!
Amazing list 🙂 I really love black and shuts book covers. I find them so striking. I also love interesting typography.
Silhouettes are lovely and interesting typography is the best. The Laini Taylor series has some of the best, most distinctive cover designs. I really dislike faces on the cover as well.
Disliking of faces seems to be a running theme this week! Also, I can’t stand when not only do they put faces but the actor’s faces from the movie adaptations!
You even whisper the words fairy tale and I’m all over the book. And anything eerie is just begging to be read. Great list.
My TTT
I love covers that are primarily black and white and have one focus color, especially if it’s red. I’ve always liked that color combo!
My TTT!
It’s just so visually appealing to me, and it allows me to keep the books distinct in my mind when an author uses a theme like that for each book in a series!
Awesome cover choices! I love the black and white plus one color covers, and the ones with interesting fonts. I think the typography on books is so important and it can definitely make me pick upo books! 🙂
Right? If the font is ugly I’m just so turned off (I know you’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover and all…but that’s kind of the point of this week’s TTT!)
Typography seems like a valued selling point for all readers. Though I’m expecting myself to read Ari and Dante soon, it’s unfortunate to hear that the symbols weren’t explained! They seem so intricate and interesting to look at.
Cheers,

I agree with your No. 9 HATE. I also don’t like books that show faces of the models. It totally alters and destroys my idea of how I imagine them. Lol
